In area scan cameras an image is captured in a single frame using a rectangular-shaped sensor. The number of pixels on the sensor is immediately reflected in the width and height of the generated image. Since objects in machine vision applications tend to be small and almost the same size in both dimensions, area-scan cameras are well suited for these applications.
