Acrylic

This lightweight thermoplastic is an effective glass alternative with thermal insulation properties. It is known for its attractive glossy surface that is available in clear or nearly any color and in transparent, translucent and opaque options. Most colors can be formulated to ensure durability for long-term outdoor use. Acrylic withstands years of exposure to the elements and even corrosive atmospheres without losing its transparency, gloss or dimensional shape. It also will not darken or deteriorate from exposure to fluorescent light. Acrylic has good impact and chemical resistance. It can withstand high stresses for short periods and is one of the most scratch-resistant thermoplastics.

  • Excellent Clarity
  • Lightweight
  • Good Impact Resistance
  • Good Thermal Insulator
  • UV Resistant
  • Best Light Transmission

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a durable material. Although it has high impact-resistance, it has low scratch-resistance. Therefore, a hard coating is applied to polycarbonate lenses. The characteristics of polycarbonate compare to those of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, acrylic), but polycarbonate is stronger and will hold up longer to extreme temperature.

  • Excellent Clarity
  • Lightweight
  • Great Impact Resistance (Better Than Acyrlic)
  • Good Thermal Insulator
  • Better Chemical Resistance than Acrylic

Soda Lime Glass

Soda–lime glass, also called soda–lime–silica glass, is the most prevalent type of glass, used for windowpanes and glass containers (bottles and jars) for beverages, food, and some commodity items. Soda–lime glass accounts for about 90% of manufactured glass

  • Chemically Stable
  • Reasonable Hardness
  • Sensitive to Changes in Temperature
  • Poor Impact Resistance
  • Not For Food Applications

Tempered Soda Lime Glass

Soda-lime glass can also easily be tempered, making the material up to three times stronger than non-tempered glass. This type of toughened glass can be found in vehicle windows, shower doors, and more, due to its unique ability to cause less injury than non-tempered glass when shattered. Soda-lime glass can also be chemically strengthened to improve scratch resistance and hardness

  • Chemically Stable
  • 3-5x Harder than Standard Soda Lime Glasss
  • Sensitive to Changes in Temperature
  • High Impact Resistance, but can shatter
  • Not For Food Applications

Borosilicate Glass

Borosilicate glass is an “engineered “glass developed specifically for use in laboratories and applications where thermal, mechanical and chemical conditions are too harsh for standard soda lime glass. It is a type of glass with silica and boron trioxide as the main glass-forming constituents. Borosilicate glasses are resistant to thermal shock more than other kinds of common glass.

  • Chemically Stable
  • Harder than Soda Lime Glass
  • Resistant to Thermal Shock
  • Good for High Temperature Applications
  • Poor Impact Resistance

Germanium

Germanium glass is typically used for solutions in thermal systems, where you want to be able to make accurate infrared image measurements without the measuring devices being disturbed by UV and VIS light. Germanium glass is what is called a high-density IR-transmitting material that blocks UV and VIS wavelengths. Germanium lets light in the wavelengths between 8000-14000 nanometers (the infrared spectrum) pass through and basically blocks all other light.

  • Good for Temperatures under 100 C
  • For use with Infrared Applications
  • Rugged Material
  • Filters out UV and Visible Light
