3-CCD/CMOS cameras are equipped with three individual image sensors, one sensor each for blue, red, and green—three of the colors separated by a prism. 3-CCD cameras require a thicker glass block than what is used for lenses for a single CCD/CMOS camera. This specialized block is placed between the lens and the sensor. When a standard lens designed for a single CCD/CMOS camera is used for 3-CCD/CMOS cameras, the camera full performance will generally not be achieved due to the optical effect of color separation within the camera. This is why special lenses are optimal for 3-CCD/CMOS cameras.
